IT security is very important in our lives. It affects our work, education, and relationships. Even our own personal computers are a vital necessity. As a result, we look for ways to protect them and prevent disasters from happening, especially when our sensitive and personal data is at risk. There are many tools that we can use on the market, but which ones are the best for us?

Windows 10 BitLocker

This week, we are looking at a well-known security program that comes with the Windows 10 (Pro or Enterprise) – BitLocker. When we have our computer stolen, we don’t just worry about the cost of buying a new one, but even worse, we worry about what is going to happen to the sensitive data in our computer drives.

BitLocker is just the security tool for that! This application takes preventive measures against your data getting into the wrong hands. They do this through device encryption.

How does bitlocker protect our data?

What is device encryption? It makes data unreadable by anyone without the right authorization. Only by entering in the right encryption key can you make the data readable again.

Your data becomes encrypted when BitLocker thinks it is in potential danger. This can be when your operating system is reset, or if one of your computer drives are taken out of your computer and put into another machine. If this needs to be done, and your computer is safe, then you need to use the encryption key to de-encrypt your data.

On a Windows 10 PC, BitLocker is usually installed but needs to be manually turned on and settings chosen. This is relatively easy and requires little to no maintenance.

You can choose which of your computer drives should be encrypted. It can encrypt everything in the operating system drive, the data drive (:D), the hard drive, and removable drives connected to the computer. However, it is wise to only allow BitLocker to encrypt the drives and the part of the drives that you are currently using.

BitLocker Requirements

  • A Windows PC (Pro and Enterprise)
  • A Trusted Platform Module (TPM) chip 1.2 or higher. This chip is installed on your motherboard and support advanced security features. If you do not have this chip, you can connect a removable USB flash drive that the BIOS can read from.
  • Your computer’s hard disc must have two partitions: a system partition and an operation system partition (Windows)
  • A BIOS that works with TPM or a USB flash drive during computer startup

Other options

If you do not have the Windows 10 Pro or Enterprise version, you can still take advantage of encryption protection.

Windows 10 Home doesn’t come with BitLocker but it does have “Device Encryption” found in Settings > Update and Security > Device Encryption.
